New Bottles From Old Bottles: Economical and FDA-Compliant Recycling of PET Flakes

Stuttgart, July 2021 – Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a high-value material that is on course to take over a key function in the plastics industry’s path toward a circular economy. PET flakes can now be processed without pre-drying into pellets using Coperion ZSK twin screw extruders. Next they are condensed in the SSP (Solid State Polycondensation) reactor, and reprocessed back into bottles again with the quality of virgin material.

In 2020 one in three wines sold in bottles across the globe came with aluminium closures, according to the latest IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. While still wine consumption decreased by 10% to 19 billion litres (or 25.3 billion 0.75l bottle equivalents) more than 85% continued to be bought in bottles (glass and plastic), followed by liquid cartons and bag-in-box.
