Bacterial Cellulose Silver Nano-composites for Food Packaging and Healthcare

Silver Nano-composites

Anti-microbial activity on rotten tomatoes

AgNps colloid has achieved only 90% antimicrobial activity whereas AgBC composite with equivalent amount of silver (<2% w/w) incorporated achieved 99.9% broad spectrum anti-microbial activity on rotten tomatoes derived microbes and sustained for 72h

  • Less toxicity and cost effective
  • Equally effective on food spoilage as well as nosocomial infection causing microbes

Highlights of the work

•Able to achieve lesser particle size (<10nm) without using a stabilizer
•<2% (w/w) of silver incorporated to achieve 99.9% broad spectrum anti-microbial activity
•The composites have shown better moisture barrier properties
•Shelf life of tomatoes extended till 30 days when compared to commercial packages (Polythene and microporous polypropylene)
•Equally effective on food spoilage as well as nosocomial infection causing microbes. Hence, the composite can also be used as wound dressing material to prevent infections
•Less toxicity and cost effective
