Centre Notifies Ban on Single-Use Plastic Items from July 1, 2022, Increases Thickness of Polythene Bags to 120 microns

Centre on Thursday notified ban on the use of ‘single-use plastic items from July 1 next year and increased thickness of polythene bags from 50 microns to 120 microns. The thickness clause will, however, be implemented in a staggered manner in two phases, beginning September 30. Currently, polythene bags of less than 50 microns are banned in the country.

MINNETONKA, Minn., August 9, 2021 – Continuing its global manufacturing expansion plan, NatureWorks, the world’s leading manufacturer of low-carbon polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers made from renewable resources, has obtained final authorization from parent companies, GC International Corporation Company Limited, a subsidiary of PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) and Cargill Incorporated (Cargill), to build a new Ingeo™️ PLA manufacturing complex in Thailand. NatureWorks plans to invest in excess of $600 million to construct the complex, which will include production sites for lactic acid, lactide, and polymer, making it the world’s first PLA facility designed to be fully integrated.

Indian scientists have developed a composite paper made of carbon (graphene oxide) loaded with preservatives that can be used as wrappers to help extend shelf life of fruits. Unlike the present preservative dipping technology, where the preservatives are adsorbed by the fruit, causing chronic toxicity to the consumers; here preservatives the wrapper releases the preservative only when needed. The wrapper can be reused, which is not possible with the present technology.
