HUL introduces behaviour change curriculum called Plastic Safari in schools in Mumbai

Hindustan Unilever Limited

As a socially responsible company that has built purpose-driven brands, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has always supported initiatives that drive recycling, reuse and recovery. The company believes that every stakeholder plays a major part in transforming how we collect and dispose of waste in India. Businesses have a significant role in achieving a new, more sustainable and inclusive growth model for the future.

To steer plastic waste management effectively, behaviour change is of utmost importance. On this premise, HUL recently launched “Plastic Safari” – a behaviour change curriculum in schools in Dahisar, Mumbai. This programme will help increase awareness in schools and housing societies with regards to waste segregation and disposal. The pilot also includes a mobile, interactive plastic recycling vehicle that will be taken through schools and housing societies, educating citizens on plastic waste management. While school children are expected to steer the pilot, it will also reach teachers, parents and housekeeping staff.

This initiative is a collaboration between HUL and Xynteo.* Plastic Safari is supported by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

At the moment, the Plastic Safari pilot has been launched in Dahisar, but the programme will be scaled up to reach the remaining parts of Mumbai in 2019. The programme’s long-term goal is to explore new business models and execute waste management solutions through new and non-traditional partnerships.

HUL is committed to creating a better future for all. With a firm focus on tackling plastic waste, the company has set a goal to make 100% of its plastics packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Rolling out the pilot of Plastic Safari in Mumbai is another small but significant step towards effective waste management.
