Balisto bar paper-based packaging for German market

Mars Wrigley Germany has become the latest major brand offering a chocolate bar series, the Balisto, in a paper-based packaging for the first time, in a deal with its retail partner German retail partner EDEKA Minden-Hannover, writes Neill Barston. The move follows a similar announcement from Nestle as it moves away from plastics used in its Smarties chocolate range, which is anticipated to herald a significant wider shift from the industry in making major environmental improvements.

Cellulose-based food packaging material move to testing phase

VTT is testing Thermocell plastic film made of cellulose and fatty acids in the production of food packaging in cooperation with Arla Foods, Paulig, and Wipak. Thermocell plastic material, which is made from renewable components, is to be used in the same way as fossil-based plastic. Thanks to the development work, many features of the film already meet the requirements of the food industry, and cooperation has advanced to the testing of industrial production.

INEOS Styrolution plans to build a demonstration polymerisation plant

INEOS Styrolution, the global leader in styrenics, announced today plans to build a demonstration plant at its Antwerp, Belgium, site to test production of ABS plastic from recycled feedstock. The plans for the new plant are part of the project “ABSolutely Circular”, which is supported by the EU LIFE programme. INEOS Styrolution’s plant is intended to complement a demonstration unit planned by project partner Indaver, making Antwerp the leading European center for the recycling of styrenics.
