The evolving global & FSSAI Food Packaging Regulations will have a far-reaching effect on the F&B industry. Packaging Material Suppliers and Food Business Operators will have to acknowledge the implications of REACH & ROHS & Emerging EU & other emerging food contact materials regulations in different geographies in their packaging solutions, to enter into business in those markets.
It is against this background that the One Day Training Programme on REACH, ROHS & Global Food Safety & Packaging Standards & Regulations, was organized on 24th May,2019 at Holiday Inn, Mumbai International Airport,in Mumbai.

The objective of the workshop to provide insights into salient aspects of emerging Indian & Global Regulations to ensure safety & sustainability.

Dr. Rangaprasad, began the day with an opening presentation on “Emerging Landscape on FCM Standards & Regulations”. He explained the difference between a standard & regulation & went on to elaborate the key trends that went into continuous evolution of FCM Regulations world over. He also briefly alluded to the evolution of the upcoming FSSAI Regulations, which will come into effect from July 2019.

The session on ROHS Covered the following points:
Basics of RoHS • Background and content of RoHS • Company’s responsibility under RoHS • International requirements of RoHS such as China RoHS, • Material testing methods, review of BOM • Homogenous material under RoHS • RoHS 1 and 2 Compliance • Exemptions under RoHS • Case studies • Reviewing supplier’s declarations
The session on Global FCM covered the following:
Food contact regulation in EU • EU Framework Regulation for Food Contact • EU Plastics Regulation 10/2011 • Various materials coming food contact such as plastic, rubber, inks etc. • Requirements for polymeric base materials, additives, monomers • Migration studies (global migration / specific migration) • Selection of test conditions, simulants etc. • Analytical methodology, Instrumentation and sample preparation associated with both specific and overall migration • Other tests important in accessing food contact materials (e.g. organoleptic and heavy metal tests) • how to comply & what to expect in the future and how to stay compliant.

The programme was marked by very high level of engagement between the participants & the faculty involving pointed questions & interesting pointers on various aspects of the subjects covered.
Participants took a quiz at the end of the session to assess their grasp of the various intricacies of REACH, ROHS & FCM Regulations, following which “ Certificate of Participation” were presented to all the delegates.
