AVI Global Plast introduces 100% recycled PET punnets safe for food-contact

Food safety and hygiene are top priorities for considering use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in food packaging. When AVI Global Plast introduced 80 to 90% recycled PET in films and packaging designs in 2013, they used state-of-the-art co-extrusion equipment to sandwich post-consumer material between virgin materials to deliver exotic fruits across 6 continents, fresh and contamination-free. These were certified by Intertek to authenticate the claim of using recycled content in the final finished pack.

LyondellBasell starts commercial production of polymers using raw material derived from plastic waste

LyondellBasell today announced another step towards its ambition to advance the circular economy by making virgin quality polymers from raw materials derived from plastic waste at its Wesseling, Germany, site. Produced by the thermal conversion of plastic waste, this raw material is converted into ethylene and propylene in the LyondellBasell production facilities, and then processed into polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) in the downstream units for plastics production.

New, sustainable r-PET cups for beer and other drinks

Greiner Packaging’s new recycled polyethylene terephthalate (r-PET) is ideal for a dedicated recycling stream, accommodating environmental, economic, and social considerations. Mechanical recycling of r-PET works well and is extremely efficient. In addition, we can expect chemical r-PET recycling to be possible starting in 2025, which will then provide an even higher purity level.

Case for Improving Plastics Circularity in Asia

EcoBlue has been working to develop rPET grade suitable for food contact applications over the past few years. The company have received a Letter of No Objection from US FDA for rPET for food contact use. Being a part of the recycling industry over these years and also working on developing rPET grades suitable for food contact, has given EcoBlue a first-hand experience of the various elements at play in the recycling industry in the region.
Pranay Jain shares his insights with other stakeholders involved the pertinent factors that he feels have an influence on improving circularity of plastics in Asia.

Glass Containers for Packaging of Pharmaceutical Products

Glass is an ideal container material for pharmaceuticals products regarding thermal and chemical resistance, and tunable transparency or selective absorption. However, glass needs high temperatures to melt and processing is highly dependent on the melt viscosity of the liquid glass. This study presents the temperature dependent viscosity of two packaging glass materials, as well as measurements of the visco-elastic properties. Quantitative data on flow and deformation behaviour are relevant for temperatures above and below the working point.
