Paper based packaging for mangoes by Smurfit Kappa

Smurfit Kappa and California Polytechnic State University worked with the National Mango Board and growers, shippers and retailers to create paper-based packaging suitable for the fruit — and their solution will be unveiled at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit.

The effort focused on Mexico’s mango industry, but the mango board and Smurfit Kappa say it will benefit the supply chain throughout all growing regions, according to a news release.

The mission now is to promote its use, according to Luis Cristerna, Smurfit Kapp sales manager.

“We know that 75% of consumer´s decisions are made at the point of purchase,” Cristerna said in a news release. “So attracting and inspiring buyers through colorful images and disruptive designs is fundamental, and it ensures a better brand positioning.”

The goal was to create mango packaging that ensured ventilation, pallet stability, food safety and brand differentiation, according to the release. Cal Poly’s Packaging Program was enlisted to help design the mango box.

“We contributed with our expertise in sustainability and innovation and helped to develop the ideal packaging which complies with all of the challenges of the project,” Cristerna said in the release.

The packaging will be launched at the Fresh Summit expo by the National Mango Board, Smurfit Kappa, Cal Poly and mango marketers, including Amazon Produce Network and C&C Produce.
