EUBP raises concerns over biased EASAC report on bio-based and biodegradable plastics

Berlin, 18 March 2020 – “If we wanted to condense the gist of the report, we could say that EASAC discourages all the innovations that appear in the industrial sector currently dominated by fossil-based plastics”, says François de Bie, Chairman of European Bioplastics (EUBP) in response to the report ‘Packaging plastic in the circular economy’ recently published by the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC).

flexible packaging

What the future could hold for flexible packaging

Flexible packaging is on the rise. In recent years it has surpassed all other packaging types including rigid plastics, metal, paper and glass. And for good reason: flexible packaging offers efficient roll-to-roll processing and appealing designs. Its high functionality also extends the shelf life of food while minimizing material usage.

HDPE containers

Novel findings for functional barriers in HDPE containers

Compatibility of the ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers with the recycling process was tested by an independent laboratory. A compatibilizer layer was originally put into the structure, in order to test how an embedded solution could improve the recyclability of a structure usually considered difficult to recycle.
